About me - Skyelar

Diabetes has been a constant in my life, even before my type 1 diagnosis at 21. Growing up, I saw its daily impact through my grandmother (type 2) and especially my mother, who navigated the complexities of type 1. I vividly remember her experiences with early tech, healthcare access challenges in America, and her resilience. These early insights gave me a deep understanding of the practical, emotional, and systemic hurdles of living with diabetes.

My own diagnosis in 2019 brought a personal dimension to these challenges. The initial fear and information overload were met with incredible support from a diabetes educator and Australia’s more accessible healthcare. This personal journey, from fear to self-management, sparked my passion to guide others.

My lived experience shapes my approach to diabetes education. I understand the anxieties of diagnosis, the frustrations of daily management, and the need for personalised strategies. Having navigated type 1 myself, I offer an empathetic and practical perspective, aiming to create a supportive environment where individuals feel heard, empowered, and equipped to thrive. I strive to connect on a human level, offering genuine support based on my own experiences.

My qualifications

My commitment to high-quality diabetes education stems from a blend of lived experience and robust qualifications. As a Credentialed Diabetes Educator (CDE), the national standard in Australia recognised by the ADEA, I uphold evidence-based practice and continuous learning in this dynamic field. My foundational Registered Nurse (RN) qualification provides a strong clinical understanding of health and diabetes physiology. Furthering this, my Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education equipped me with specialised skills in self-management, insulin therapy, glucose monitoring technologies, and the psycho-social aspects of living with diabetes.

My professional path has provided diverse healthcare experiences. I gained valuable insights into chronic condition management and the specific needs of older adults with diabetes through my work in aged care.

As an RN at an Aboriginal Community Controlled GP practice, I became aware of the importance of delivering culturally sensitive and holistic diabetes care within the community. This hands-on experience allows me to translate theoretical knowledge into practical, real-world strategies for individuals navigating diabetes.

The unique combination of my personal journey with type 1 diabetes and my professional credentials as a CDE and RN allows me to offer comprehensive and empathetic support. I am dedicated to staying current with advancements in diabetes care and technology, ensuring the information and guidance I provide are accurate, evidence-based, and tailored to individual needs. My aim is to empower people with diabetes to live full and healthy lives through informed education, genuine support, and a deep understanding of their unique circumstances.
